How to Export ChatGPT Conversations

Every way to export a ChatGPT conversation - to PDF, Word, Markdown, and more - plus the fastest one-click method.

ChatGPT keeps your conversations inside its own app, where they're hard to search and easy to lose. This guide covers every way to get a conversation out, from the built-in options to a one-click export.

Method 1: ChatGPT's built-in options

  • Account data export. In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Data controls → Export. ChatGPT emails you an archive of your whole history. This is good for a full backup, but it arrives as bulky HTML, takes time, and isn't meant for saving a single chat.
  • Share link. The share button creates a public URL for a conversation. It's handy for showing someone a chat, but it's not a file you own and it can expose more than you intend.

Method 2: Print to PDF

Press Ctrl/Cmd + P and choose Save as PDF. For a short conversation that fits on screen this works well and needs no extra tools. The catch is longer chats: ChatGPT only renders the part scrolled into view, so the print can come out incomplete, and it may pick up stray interface controls (like the floating message toolbar), leave the turns unlabeled, and drop the source and export time. See the PDF export guide for a side-by-side comparison.

Method 3: One-click export with AI Chat Snapper

AI Chat Snapper reads the conversation you're viewing and turns it into a clean file in one click:

  1. Open the ChatGPT conversation.
  2. Click the AI Chat Snapper icon.
  3. Choose PDF, Word, PNG, Markdown, TXT, or JSON.
  4. Save it locally, or send it to Notion, Google Docs, or Obsidian.

Because it reads the chat directly, headings, lists, and code blocks stay intact. The same extension works across 10 AI assistants, and local exports are 100% offline.

Which method should you use?

  • A complete backup of everything → ChatGPT's account data export.
  • Saving the conversation in front of you → a one-click export, choosing the format that fits where it's going next.
